Join Lindsay Gary, MPA, MA, Thursday, May 27, from 5 to 8 p.m. for an AncesTREE painting workshop at the Community Artists’ Collective. Gary will guide participants in creating and painting their own family tree. The workshop is $50 and includes supplies.
Her exhibition “AncesTREE,” which is currently showing at The Collective, is a self-portraiture series--an extension of genealogical research wherein specific ancestries have been discovered.
The exhibition specifically explores two layers of maternal ancestry--distant ancestors in Africa represented through traditional clothing and recent ancestors represented through black and white photographs. Ultimately it is a work on identity, ancestry, history and culture and how the meeting of these ancestors (represented through a mosaic of images) parallels contemporary experiences.
A workshop where attendees will create a collage of their family photos/history will be held on Saturday, May 29, from 3 to 5 p.m.
